Sugar Mills

As promised, I took my parents to see some old sugar mills around the island. These are some pictures from the Coconut Walk Estates sugar mill; the largest sugar mill on Nevis. The mill starts up near the main road and continues nearly a half of a mile down towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The Famous Herbert Heights

[First, I must apologize for the delay between posts. It's taking me a bit longer to adjust to Med 3 than anticipated, however I should be back up and running at full speed in no time.]

There is a place on the island called Herbert Heights, which is home to the soon-to-be-famous Coal Pot Restaurant. Just so you get the idea -- you must travel up about a mile above the town of Gingerland, on the windward side of the island. Once you reach the "Carib Bar," you hang a left, and travel up another half of a mile (on a 2-track), until you reach the dirt road. This dirt road basically leads you into the rainforest...and eventually to Herbert Heights. Here are a few snapshots of what we saw from a couple thousand feet up...

The drive up didn't look too promising

The Arrival

Welcome to Nevis

"Island Time" -- my Mom and Dad learned all too quickly the meaning of "island time." This refers to the fact that once you're in the Caribbean, you never know what time things will be happening, regardless of any sort of itinerary. Oddly enough, their flight to Nevis from St. Maarten was actually EARLY. I was scheduled to pick them up at 7:05pm, yet they landed at 6:20pm -- and because they didn't know my "physical address," they were told they couldn't enter the country! Once that fiasco was taken care of, we got settled into the condo, and then we headed out to the famous Double Deuce restaurant for some dinner and drinks. Like a true 'Miller boy,' it was only a matter of 20 minutes or so before my dad was chatting it up with a cute young blonde from Liverpool. It wasn't until a few days later that my mom evened the score over at St. Kitts by finding her 'island guy' (St. Kitt's pics will follow shortly). We spent a few hours hanging out at the condo after dinner before I went back out to meet up with some classmates for an end-of-the-semester celebration at Sunshine's.

Cinco de Mayo

Med 3 welcomed us back just in time to celebrate our Mexican heritage....well, we pretended anyway. Margaritas and tortilla chips with home-made salsa was the perfect way to celebrate.
